Why the Ultra-Wealthy Are Hiring Plastic Surgery Doulas
Cosmetic surgery often looks glamorous from the outside. Before-and-after photos flood social media, while celebrity transformations dominate headlines. Yet behind every procedure lies a maze of consultations, medical jargon, scheduling barriers, and emotional stress. Many patients enter this process expecting a straightforward experience, only to face confusion and pressure when it matters most.
A growing niche within the beauty and wellness space now addresses that gap.
In Los Angeles, concierge consultants Julie Obst and Alana Ungvari guide clients through the complex world of cosmetic surgery with a level of attention typically reserved for luxury travel planning or high-end event management. Their company, LA Beauty Connect, supports patients before, during, and after procedures, offering a structured approach to an experience that often feels overwhelming.
The pair describe their role using a term borrowed from childbirth support: plastic surgery doulas.
Julie Obst explained the concept clearly in an interview with The Post: “We think of ourselves very much as plastic surgery doulas because we hand-hold our clients from beginning to end of their journey and provide physical, mental and emotional support.”
Their approach blends planning, emotional guidance, and behind-the-scenes coordination. The result resembles a concierge service designed specifically for elective surgery.
A Friendship That Turned Into a Business

Instagram | labeautyconnect | Obst and Ungvari’s 2023 business venture is rooted in a 25-year-long friendship.
The partnership between Obst and Ungvari began long before LA Beauty Connect launched in 2023. Their friendship stretches back 25 years and started in a surprisingly simple way.
Julie Obst recalled the first meeting during the same interview: “Alana and I have actually known each other for 25 years. I was looking for a roommate… In two hours we met and we became best friends, and we were in each other’s weddings, and our kids are best friends and the rest is history.”
Their professional backgrounds complement each other in a unique way. Obst spent decades in beauty public relations and grew up around the cosmetics industry. Her mother worked as a makeup artist for Dior and Chanel, which shaped her understanding of beauty culture and aesthetics.
Alana Ungvari built a career in private equity, hospitality, and private aviation. These industries place high value on discretion, detailed planning, and personalized client service. Those skills later became central to their cosmetic surgery consulting work.
The turning point came when Obst began researching cosmetic procedures for herself after pregnancy.
She described the experience as chaotic. Advice came from friends, acquaintances, and online forums. Recommendations often contradicted one another. One person praised a surgeon as exceptional, while another warned about negative results from the same doctor.
That moment revealed a larger problem.
The process of selecting a surgeon, Obst realized, should not feel like scrolling through Yelp reviews while making medical decisions.
A “Matchmaking” Process for Surgeons
LA Beauty Connect operates less like a referral service and more like a tailored matching system. Each client begins with a detailed intake process designed to build a full picture of their situation.
The intake includes discussions about health history, lifestyle factors, aesthetic goals, scheduling needs and financial boundaries.
Once that information is collected, Obst and Ungvari recommend surgeons from a national network they have personally vetted.
The process does not stop with referrals. The consultants also attend consultations alongside clients. They take notes, track details, and ask questions that many patients may overlook in the moment.
This level of preparation often proves valuable once discussions turn technical.
Julie Obst noted that patients tend to absorb less information during initial medical meetings than they expect. “People only normally retain 40% of what they’re listening to in their initial consultations with us,” she said.
Written notes, follow-up questions, and detailed plan comparisons help clients understand their options with greater clarity.
When Confidence Meets Reality
The experience of client M. Cohan illustrates how quickly the process can become complicated. Cohan, a 52-year-old former Fortune 500 executive, initially believed she could manage the surgery process alone.
“I thought I would be absolutely fine doing this on my own because I am very competent and detail oriented,” Cohan told The Post. “I was an executive at a Fortune 500 company for years and thought I could easily handle navigating this process.”
That assumption changed quickly. Even scheduling a consultation proved difficult.
“I called the first plastic surgeon for an appointment and got a huge run around from the receptionist. I realized that there are going to be gatekeepers just to even get a consult appointment,” she explained.

After receiving a referral from a friend, Cohan connected with Obst and Ungvari. Their guidance helped her secure consultations and evaluate surgical plans.
Cohan ultimately underwent a neck and face lift combined with lower blepharoplasty, a brow lift, and fat grafting during the summer of 2025.
During consultations, she noticed how much the consultants contributed to the process. “At each consult, they knew what to ask and took copious notes. There was no way I knew all the questions that needed to be asked during these meetings,” she said.
Reviewing multiple surgical proposals also became easier with their assistance. Obst and Ungvari helped clarify medical terminology and communicated with surgeons’ offices whenever details required further explanation.
Why Surgeon Selection Matters
One of the strongest messages the consultants share with clients involves surgeon specialization.
According to Ungvari, many patients assume that a doctor who produced great results for a friend will produce identical outcomes for them.
“The number one mistake we see when it comes to women who want to get plastic surgery is going to their ‘best friend’s doctor’ and expecting the same results, even for a different procedure entirely,” Ungvari said.
She often explains the idea with a blunt comparison: “You don’t date your best friend’s husband or partner, so you shouldn’t go to her favorite doctor. Surgeons are not one-size-fits-all.”
Different surgeons develop reputations for specific procedures. A doctor known for facial work may not specialize in body contouring, and vice versa. Matching patients with the right expertise becomes a key part of the service.
Coordinating the Entire Experience
Many LA Beauty Connect clients travel to Los Angeles for procedures. When that happens, the consultants coordinate far more than medical appointments.
Travel logistics may include private jet bookings, extended-stay accommodations, and pre-arranged transportation. Recovery preparation also receives careful attention.
Ungvari described the level of detail involved: “If we’re arranging a private plane for them, if we’re arranging a long term stay, if we are grocery shopping and filling their fridge with recommended foods… if someone was not a local, it’s just a lot more work.”
They also schedule lymphatic drainage treatments, post-operative nurses, and aftercare facility stays when needed.
Even small details are considered. Julie Obst once mentioned wanting to know about the parking situation outside a clinic. They also warn clients about unexpected impressions, such as a receptionist’s dramatic lip filler that might make a nervous patient question the practice before meeting the surgeon.
On surgery day, their role continues behind the scenes. Cohan described how the pair stayed connected throughout her lengthy operation.
“I was much more relaxed and confident knowing that they would be monitoring the surgery all day,” she said. Communication flowed between the surgeon’s office, the aftercare facility, and her husband.
The Emotional Side of Cosmetic Surgery

While cosmetic procedures often face criticism as vanity-driven decisions, many patients approach them with deeply personal motivations.
Ungvari recalled the impact of helping an 18-year-old girl finally receive a breast reduction after years of waiting for parental approval.
“There’s nothing like having a young girl who has been waiting until her mom said it was okay to get a breast reduction at 18 and all of a sudden she’s standing up straighter and smiling more and not ashamed of herself,” she said.
Other cases involve corrective work after unsuccessful procedures. Obst described one client who sought help after a previous surgery produced severe contour issues.
“His body looked like an accordion,” she said. After finding a specialist to correct the problem, the client felt confident enough to visit the beach comfortably for the first time.
Cost of Guidance and Shortcut Risks
Concierge surgery guidance comes at a price. LA Beauty Connect services typically begin with a $750 consultation. A full three-month guidance cycle can cost around $10,000.
Even so, the founders argue that cosmetic surgery itself is where financial shortcuts carry the greatest risk.
Ungvari expressed this view clearly: “Elective surgery is expensive. This is not where you should be cutting corners, trying to get a coupon deal, or going to the cheapest surgeon. Surgery is still surgery. Period. That’s it.”
She also raised concerns about patients relying on artificial intelligence tools or online algorithms when researching surgeons.
“It’s terrifying that some people are using AI and ChatGPT to find surgeons. There’s no baseline for that information,” Ungvari said. Personal feedback, emotional support, and real-world knowledge remain essential during medical decisions.
Elective cosmetic surgery involves far more than a single day in an operating room. Patients must evaluate surgeons, review treatment plans, prepare for recovery, and manage emotional stress throughout the process.
The rise of plastic surgery consultants such as Julie Obst and Alana Ungvari reflects that reality. Their work demonstrates how structured guidance, logistical planning, and emotional reassurance can reshape an experience that often feels uncertain and intimidating.
For many clients, the most valuable part of the service is not the surgical outcome alone. Instead, it is the presence of experienced support throughout a journey where every decision carries weight.
